It's Wallpaper Wednesday...and this year we are talking about local produce!

Although the winters are cold in Western Pennsylvania, the region benefits from the other three seasons that offer beautiful and pleasant weather for growing produce.

Hydroponic basil is one of the first spring items to appear. As we head into mid-May, the brief season of local asparagus starts to emerge, coupled with Ramps (Wild Leeks) and strawberries.

In early June, Heirloom and cluster tomatoes start to make their way to the market, followed by herbs, kale, and collard greens in mid-June. As June wraps, zucchini and yellow squash are ready to harvest, and then seemingly overnight, become overabundant!

Everyone say HI 👋 to Maria!

During her short time with us she has already had a positive impact on our Southern California office. Her positive energy is contagious and uplifting to those around her. She partners with her colleagues in the Sanitation department and is always adaptable. She cares for our indoor plants and takes the initiative to address areas that need attention without anyone directing her.

We think she is a great example of our Value of Defining Excellence. We are fortunate to have Maria on our team and look forward to continuing to see her excel in her role.

She has a creative mindset and enjoys designing and rearranging her living space in her personal life. She has a 17-year-old son that is her pride and joy and is her fuel to get up early every morning.

Maria, thank you for all you do for us every day, and for helping make FreshPoint a great place to be. Let’s all give her a wave hello! 👋 #peoplepassionproduce

Fiddleheads have been consumed for centuries by numerous cultures. There are records of these delights being consumed in Japan, Siberia, Scandinavia and North America.

Once the coils appear, time is of the essence. The young and flavorful coils will unfurl into an inedible fern in two weeks. People have described the flavor as being a cross between green beans and asparagus, with a nutty undertone, sometimes having a slightly bitter bite. Consider boiling or steaming them and then tossing them in a bit of brown butter with a touch of prosciutto for a uniquely flavored spring side dish. (Note: They must be cooked before eating.)

Fiddlehead ferns are seasonal and at their best in the spring. The early purple-tinged varieties start from the western areas and then as the season progresses the eastern emerald green colored varieties round out the season.
